Chinese white dolphin or Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin (Kingdom: Animal; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalian; Order: Cetacea; Suborder: Odontoceti, toothed whales; Family: Delphinidae; Genus: Sousa) is a marine mammal species with high intelligence which has been designated as the first state key protected animal. Without doubt it will be the second most intelligent animal after humans based on weight, brain and spinal cord ratio.
Chinese white dolphin is a valuable treasure of China. It is a lovely, playful and known as a ‘mermaid’ and ‘aquatic panda’. Fishermen call it ‘Macau fish’ after local marine goddess ‘Macau’. It was chosen as a mascot by Hong Kong government during re-unification on July 1st, 1997. |
